Port Mayaca Cemetery on State Road 76 in Stuart County was founded as a place to inter the victims from the 1928 hurricane and the ensuing flooding of Lake Okeechobee.

Who: Managed by the City of Pahokee

What: The cemetery houses a memorial to the 1600 people who died during the 1928 Hurricane.

Where: 23900 SW Kanner Hwy (ST RD 76), about 3 miles east of 441 or 23 miles east of I-95

When: Open daily from sunrise to sunset

Why: 
  • 1928 Hurricane Memorial
  • Beautiful memorial gardens on the property
  • Only in-ground cemetery in the area before the 1960s
